Mid-afternoon during Roosevelt Island's annual Cherry Blossom Festival finds Gerald Starlight's shakuhachi lifting meditative tones in two performances.
Starlight, who has played his original shakuhachi flute music live at Lincoln Center and on WQXR radio, begins at Paul Calendrillo, 507 Main Street, at 3:00 before moving over to Gallery RIVAA, 527 Main Street, at 5:00. He will be accompanied by Andy Newcomb on synthesizer.
As I wrote in a 2012 article in the Main Street WIRE, the shakuhachi is a Japanese bamboo flute rarely heard in this country, one long associated with meditation.
"A splendid time is guaranteed for all," says Starlight.
