For their annual Sunset Garden Party fundraiser on June 14th, FDR Four Freedoms Park adds a touch of honor with an award for "Tom Brokaw, who was the Master of Ceremonies at the Park’s dedication ceremony in October 2012, and has spent his entire distinguished journalism career defending and promoting freedom, particularly the role of a free press in our democracy."

Everyone is invited to attend this event and enjoy the pleasures of Four Freedoms Park with the City at bay but its skyline breathtaking as ever.

As in previous years, hundreds are expected come out to honor Brokaw and "to celebrate and support the Park and its educational initiatives. Proceeds raised from this event are used to restore and maintain Four Freedoms Park, and provide free and low-cost public and educational programs to visitors of all ages."

The event runs from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., rain or shine. You can find out more and get your tickets by clicking here.

As for Brokaw, he's best known for his twenty-two years of anchoring the NBC Nightly News, but since retiring, according to Wikipedia, Brokaw serves on the board of directors of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Committee to Protect Journalists, the International Rescue Committee and the Mayo Clinic. He is also a member of the Howard University School of Communications Board of Visitors and a trustee of the University of South Dakota, the Norton Simon Museum, the American Museum of Natural History, and the International Rescue Committee. He also provides the voiceover for a University of Iowa advertisement that airs on television during Iowa Hawkeyes athletic events.

He has been married to Meredith Lynn Auld, a former Miss South Dakota, for fifty-five years.

June 14th will bring Tom Brokaw one more honor, tying him to our greatest president and his message to the world celebrated at Roosevelt Island's own FDR Four Freedoms Park.
