Election Night 2017 sends a message across America

The Washington Post calls it "an election night thrashing" for Republicans, and it was... from coast to coast. But the GOP didn't just lose - the Democrats won.

Election Night 2017: Republicans Soundly Beaten by Democrats

Starting close to home, one of the nation's most outspoken progressive Democrats, Bill de Blasio, quietly managed a 40 point victory, an endorsement of his policies, most notably universal Pre K.

Another enthusiastic education booster, Ben Kallos defeated Republican challenger Frank Spotorno in the race for City Council 5th District. Results aren't available yet.

Democratic Wins Swell Nationwide

In what reports call a rejection of Trumpism, Democratic wins were relentless as voting results rolled from East to West.

Some were stunning.

In Connecticut, according to the Hartford Courant, Democrats "notched a string of stunning victories in Tuesday’s municipal elections, taking control of government in suburban Republican strongholds such as Farmington, Glastonbury and Trumbull."

A closely watched Virginia Governor's race saw Democrat Ralph S. Northam soundly defeat former Republican Party Chairman Ed Gillespie who openly ran a Trump-style campaign.

Next door, in New Jersey, Philip D. Murphy whipped Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno with a double digit margin.

By morning, it was hard to find anything to cheer Republicans anywhere. As far away as Washington, Democrat Manka Dhingra took an early lead in an election that could flip the State Senate, creating an unbroken wall of Democratic legislatures along the entire West Coast.

The Courant reported that "Party leaders attribute the wins at least partly to cadres of newly engaged activists who were spurred by the election of President Donald Trump last year."

The same may be true nationwide, a response that actively started with the Women's March on January 21st and maintained momentum since.

Campaigns for next year's national elections, critical for both parties, have already begun. Last night's results suggest that passions will rise. Activism is on the move.
