"RIOC will be upgrading the Island’s Automated Vacuum Collection system (AVAC) from August 26th through the middle of September," the State agency announced on Monday.

Planned work on Roosevelt Island's one-of-a-kind trash disposal system seeks to secure future operations by replacing and updating aged technology.

RIOC's AVAC operation is not part of New York City's municipal operations but interfaces with it at its endpoint north of Motorgate. It's remarkable track record for reliability often goes unnoticed largely because it's been so reliable major failures rarely force us to notice.

To continue the 4 decade run of success, RIOC will do the following, beginning on Monday.

  • electric work to restore the controls currently affecting daily service
  • upgrade of the control system
  • installation of new blowers in the Terminal Station
  • new valves in existing buildings

RIOC adds, "We ask everyone to obey all signage and traffic diversion measures while work is ongoing."

Use RIOC's Tikkit page for questions or concerns while work is ongoing.

As always, to report an emergency, call the Public Safety Department (212) 832-4545 or 911.
