Senior Center Manager Builds In Its Second Year

CBN/RI Senior Center Invigorates with Change & a New Face

Nearly eighteen months ago, the Carter Burden Network assumed the task of managing the Senior Center at 546 Main Street after a local group, RISA, saw their contract terminated by the City Department for the Aging, its primary funding source. Now having stabilized the troubled operation, CBN is transitioning Yulisa Santana to a new position and adding Fred Colero as Case Manager.

Santana, whose career in social services includes a stint as caseworker with the Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement House, moves from her position as CBN's first caseworker on Roosevelt Island to Community Liaison.

She also served in the DFTA/Self-help Community Services Integrated Benefits Enrollment mini pilot to increase the numbers of seniors receiving benefits and entitlements in New York and worked with the LGBT community at Queens Pride House.

"It was a natural segue," said Center Director Lisa Fernandez. "She has great rapport with the seniors, and I thought she'd be perfect for the job."

Fernandez earlier tried to persuade Santana to take over when Hallie Shapiro, who first gave shape to the position, left to work in the profit sector. This time, she was successful.

Called on to fill in the caseworker position is Fred Colero, who comes to CBN from Lifespire, a nonprofit dedicated to helping people with disabilities where he was a Medicaid Service Coordinator.

Colero has also worked the phones for outreach to seniors to ensure their well-being by consistently maintaining contact with them.

Of Colero, Fernandez says simply, "He gets it."

With the addition of Colero and Santana's move, Fernando and CBN's management passes a significant hurdle, seamlessly enabling significant change in a no longer directionless environment.
