Updated: New York in Near Lockdown, Coronavirus Cancelations & Closures

To help our readers, we're keeping track of closing caused by coronavirus precautions. As of today, New York City has been forced into a near lockdown as Mayor Bill de Blasio and Governor Andrew Cuomo took extreme steps to counter the spread of the coronavirus. Along with closing all public schools and senior centers, the city is closing all nightclubs and limited restaurants to takeout and delivery. Tens of thousands will lose their jobs, and some businesses will never reopen. No plans to compensate workers or businesses were announced.

Updates as of March 15th, 8:00 p.m.

For Roosevelt Island:

    • All classes at Cornell Tech have migrated to online or been canceled, but the campus itself and the café (Takeout Only) remain open.
    • Roosevelt Island Historical Society will close its Kiosk until further notice.
    • RIHS has also canceled its Cherry Blossom Tour.
    • All New York Public Library Branches, including Roosevelt Island, are closed. Books due for return will have their dates extended.
    • The Carter Burden Network is shutting down all programing until further notice. Staff will remain on hand, and meals will be served, starting a noon, weekdays for takeout only. Frozen weekend meals and home delivered meals will continue as usual.
    • RIVAA's Vernissage XIX, including the opening reception, has been postposed until further notice.
    • Main Street Theatre & Dance Alliance suspended all in person classes for two weeks, starting March 15th, resuming on March 29th. They will supplement with private video classes for students only and make other adjustments.
    • RIOC has closed all facilities and canceled all facility permits until further notice.
    • PS/Is 217 and all other public schools are closed until at least April 20th. Plans to help poor children with meals and internet connections to stay active are sketchy to non-existent.
    • Restaurants are now limited to takeout and delivery only.
