Crown Castle's Ugly Cell Phone Tower Just Got Uglier

"Godzilla attacks Main St." or Does size matter when it comes to ugly?

Judy Berdy, on one of her regular jaunts along Main Street, was startled (and annoyed) to find that, rather than responding to resident complaints, RIOC partner, Crown Castle NG East, was busy making their eyesore cell tower in Good Shepherd Plaza still uglier.

A month ago, we reported in Abomination on Main Street that RIOC's obtuseness toward community values took a leap forward, scaring the bucolic 19th Century historical plaza with a black stovepipe style cell tower smack dab where landmark and modern times intersect.

It was tone deaf, even for RIOC.

At least a dozen street lampposts provide light in antique style along the Main Street canyon. With uncanny ignorance, RIOC and Crown Castle put their creative minds together and, as spring follows winter, selected the worst possible place for the dramatic esthetic downgrade.

The brainstorm of RIOC Vice President/Legal Counsel Jacqueline Flug, who blew off concerns from resident Board Members when raised at a Committee review, the towers are intended to improve cellular reception with particular attention to - guess where? - RIOC's offices.

That's all well and good. RIOC's role in community life, from top to bottom, benefits from better communications. No one's questioning that.

But as Berdy asked in an email, "Does this look anything like what we were shown?"

Berdy refers to the November meeting of the Real Estate Development Advisory Committee in which Crown Castle promised unobtrusive towers that blend easily with old style streetlights already accenting Main Street.

Why isn't RIOC holding them to their promise and, instead, allowing ugly to flower into uglier in the worst possible location?

We asked both Flug and President/CEO Susan Rosenthal to comment.

Both answered in the same way: "                               ."

Judy Berdy volunteered a suggestion for covering the ugly cell tower. Although satirical, it'd be an improvement.

What the hell’s going on with Blackwell House? The question popped into my head last week when I saw the historic landmark under a protective wrap again. How an Indonesian Fire hits New York City… “It is with very heavy hearts we announce that Presbyterian Orphanage in Tomohon, where we found Mathew Tendean Luce 24 years ago, was burned to the ground,” wrote Roosevelt Island based humanitarian Jim Luce.
