As summer winds down its last view weeks, Roosevelt Island buzzes with makeovers that improve safety and extend the lifespan of a treasured infrastructure icon.

Barely visible behind Manhattan Park, a RIOC contractor is busy with trenching work for laying new electric cables. They replace deteriorated wiring that keeps our vital AVAC disposal system operating. It's part of a plan to extend AVAC's lifespan for decades.

Meanwhile, completely invisible are stripes separating traffic in several areas along Main Street. A poorly done job by New York State's Department of Transportation increased driving hazards as its work melted under normal conditions.

On Wednesday evening, a new RIOC contractor corrects that with fresh striping from Blackwell House to 40 River Road.

Finally, next week RIOC is expected to formally announce the closing of Octagon Field's restrooms. Work on the playing field nears completion, and next up, the comfort station facilities get a full makeover.
