Island Kids has long been an invaluable resource for Roosevelt Island families. Now growing more dynamic and expanding outreach, they're introducing two new, exciting programs for middle school kids. But don't worry about the cost. They're free.

Not familiar with Island Kids?

Here's why they're so important for us.

"Island Kids is a not for profit organization providing support to the families of Roosevelt Island by offering affordable, quality enrichment opportunities and support groups. Programming includes enrichment classes for babies, toddlers and pre schoolers, support programs and workshops for parents and caregivers, a summer camp program for children aged 4-10 and an After School Program for at PS/IS 217."

That's modest. They've always stretched beyond the confines of their mission statement with scholarships that let needy kids join in for free, and their commitment to quality innovation expands the circle every year.

For 2017, a pair of new programs for Middle School students are free. Priority is given to students enrolled at P.S./I.S. 217.

Allergic to Salad

Fridays from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., Grades 6 to 8

"Allergic to Salad introduces children to fun, hands-on, from-scratch STEM-based culinary classes. Together we'll hone our culinary skills by learning how to use a variety of tools (knife, grater, peeler, etc), discuss kitchen and food safety, explore new and exciting foods, cultures, recipes and come together to expand our tastes by enjoying unique dishes. Classes create a platform for a lifetime of adventurous eating and purposeful life-skills."

It's hard to imagine a program more valuable for families with pressing budget and time demands.

Classes begin this week. Fill out the form at the bottom of this page to enroll. More information? Email Island Kids at ISLANDKIDSRI@GMAIL.COM.

B.E.A.T. NYC Explorers

Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Grades 6 to 9

Free: Island Kids Great New Programs for Middle Schoolers

"Beat Explorers includes elements  such as lyricism and creative writing, with an emphasis on music production, beat making, and career development. The Beat Explorers program engages students in all aspects of what it means to be a Music Producer: devotion, professionalism, hard work, creativity, and a fundamental knowledge of both production hardware and the latest technology. While a Beat Rhymers class tends to culminate in a final performance, Beat Explorers students focus on writing and recording professional-quality songs with original beats, lyrics, and music."

Although the program started last week, enrollments are still being encouraged. Fill out the form at the bottom of this page to enroll. More information? Email Island Kids at ISLANDKIDSRI@GMAIL.COM.
