RIVAA artist Laura Hussey shared her thoughts on artwork in her solo exhibit Fragments opening Saturday, with a public evening reception from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., at Gallery RIVAA, 527 Main Street, Roosevelt Island.

"The painting, drawing, graphics and ceramic work in this exhibition is inspired by the art, mythology, poetry, landscape and culture of Greece," she told The Daily.

"It's called Fragments because it takes little pieces from many areas and time periods and puts them together.

"The large paintings, specifically, were inspired by the archeological sites all over Greece where fragments of old mosaics, pottery, etc. remain. In attempting to convey to today’s viewers what these works might have looked like when they were created, sometimes images are painted by filling in the gaps. Other times it is left more to the viewer’s imagination."

Foundations for the Work

"I have used this as a starting point as if the paintings were originally pottery or mosaics or in some cases complete mosaics which are partially uncovered under newer works. Then I have 'filled in the blanks.'

"With the two paintings based on black vase painting two ceramic pieces were created to represent the original pieces of pottery now painted into the painting as if they had been broken and fallen in front of the painting. Most of the rest of the ceramic pieces are based on Greek mythology."

Greek Myths for Inspiration

"The tales of Daphne, Medusa, Midas, the Gordian knot and Narcissus are well known. The Rosy Fingered Dawn is a reference to Homer, and the Column of women’s tunics is based on ancient Greek temple architecture. The piece called Tamata is a more modern inspiration from the Greek Orthodox Church.

"The portraits are straightforward. All of them are portraits of friends and except for the small fragmented portraits are not tied thematically to the rest of the works."
