On an otherwise lovely autumn Saturday, the first in this COVID year, a fistfight between two reportedly intoxicated members ended with one bludgeoning the other, sending him to the hospital by ambulance. Sources tell us that both were arrested, but RIOC's Public Safety Department disappointed again with chilly silence.

As we reported yesterday, long-simmering tensions within the Roosevelt Island Garden Club erupted in violence late Saturday afternoon.

Details are sketchy due to RIOC's failure to update its PSD incident logs since early September, but sources with knowledge of the incident say that, after hitting another garden club member several times with a piece of lumber, one fighter who lives in Long Island City fled by bicycle, leaving the other bloody and unconscious.

A direct request for information emailed to RIOC acting president/CEO Shelton Haynes, vice president and legal counsel Gretchen Robinson, communications director Erica Spencer-EL and PSD chief Kevin Brown, requesting information on Sunday morning, was not acknowledged by any of them.

In the vacuum, rumors abounded. Although PSD has again neglected its role in informing the community in a timely and accurate fashion, we learned that he combatants were Vaughn Anglesey and Farouk Amad, a nonresident.

History of Conflict

Behind the gentle cover of flowers, grasses and trees, the garden club has long hidden conflicts and power struggles among members. In 2013, a New York Times article reported accusations of boozing, smoking not necessarily of the tobacco variety and illicit sex.

Sex is the only issue reportedly not involved in this conflict.

Complimenting RIOC PSD's failures above is a companion history of ignoring illegal behavior going on for years among the members only flora and fauna domain.
