New Roosevelt Island Library to Break Ground Friday

Celebrate the groundbreaking of the new Roosevelt Island Library. You're invited to join officials from the New York Public Library on Friday, October 12th at 10:00 at the new site at 504 Main Street and witness a milestone in community history.

The first library here made a home on the first floor in Westview in the 1980s, founded by pioneers, including the legendary author, Alice Childress. A later campaign overcame budgetary obstacles to have the collection adopted by the City's system.

Now, in a major step forward, the library's journey to a new, more modern home stirs imaginations, young and old, with the beginning of construction.

"The New York Public Library is thrilled to break ground on the new home for the Roosevelt Island Library," said Norah Yahya, Associate Director of Government & Community Affairs, in a press release.

"The new library will be more than double the size of the current library – which is only a short distance away at 524 Main Street – and is expected to be 5,200 sq. ft. allowing the Library to better accommodate the growing community with a welcoming larger space for reading, programs, computers, and more."

Light refreshments, at the current branch, will follow the groundbreaking ceremony.
