Haynes Acts Fast On Illegal Parkers At RIOC

New Leadership, Fast Action At RIOC

When a resident spotted illegal parking outside RIOC's Main Street Offices, she snapped a photo and tipped The Daily. Taking up acting president/CEO Shelton Haynes on his promise of transparency and change at the state agency, we forwarded the complaint. Haynes did not hesitate.

RIOC's offices reopened this week, bringing much of the workforce back from months of remote work.

But it also brought suggestions of bad behavior from the past.

"Why am I seeing cars parked in an area clearly marked no parking or standing in public space blocking benches next to the RIOC offices?" our reader asked. "There is ample designated space for RIOC vehicles near by next to the Bread and Butter Grocery store just a few feet away."

One vehicle, blocking a bench, had he gall to pull in to a space with a "No Parking" sign just a few feet away.

"This open space and benches near the wheelchair ramp outside Island House are frequently used by seniors and these cars are up in their faces blocking the fresh air and clear view. The Child School students and faculty have to navigate a circuitous path through these erratically parked vehicles when leaving their building to cross the street as well," she continued.

"We have ample parking on the island and residents are ticketed for not using the space legally. The open space between Island House and Westview is not a parking lot. Should the people working here have special privileges to the detriment of residents?

"During this time when policing is under a microscope our Public safety officers have performed admirably," she concluded. "Why are they not allowed to ticket these illegally parked cars?"

Shelton Haynes Responds

In the past few years, you could expect a middling response like, "We're looking into it," or often no response at all.

But Haynes, after barely two weeks on the job, has reiterated his determination to improve RIOC for whatever time he spends in the position.

He thanked our reader, "...for bringing this to my attention.

"We will address accordingly," he promised, "while ensuring that our staff are adhering to parking rules and regulations. Our Public Safety department will increase their monitoring of parking compliance on the island."

Among many tangles and challenges RIOC's new leader must tackle, this one suggests the best of intentions for follow through, but will the rest of the team make the same level of commitment?
