No Fs to Manhattan, One Tram and No Shuttle Buses

How Difficult Will Transportation Be for Roosevelt Island, This Weekend?

Although there will be no Manhattan bound F Trains, all weekend, and we're restricted to a single Tram cabin, RIOC has decided not to help out with shuttle buses. Here are your options.

Says RIOC Vice President of Operations Shelton Haynes, "We explored the matter internally and found that there is no need to have extra shuttle buses this weekend. The Tram will still have one functional cabin; the Ferry is now open and the Queens bound F train is only two stops to Roosevelt Ave which is a transfer location for the Manhattan Bound F train."

Haynes information is inaccurate on at least one count. F Trains run locally in Queens, this weekend; so make that at least six stops out to Jackson Heights/Roosevelt Avenue.

The Jackson Heights stop is handicapped accessible by way of elevator to all levels, which mitigates some of the issues.

As for the NYC Ferry, boats arrive and depart at 33 minute intervals, and the system has been overcrowded on past holiday weekends with long waiting lines. You can get the schedule and buy tickets here, but what to expect over the Labor Day Weekend is anyone's guess.

The Tram? RIOC is putting them on rush hour schedules from 7:00 a.m until 10:00 p.m., but we've all seen the crush on weekends with only a single cabin when F Trains were operating normally. Fewer than two ferries per hour is not expected to provide much relief.

But maybe we'll get lucky. In any case, we will be prepared as much as we can be.

Maybe enjoy the holiday right here between channels of the East River.
