When the city released COVID-19 antibody results, broken down by Zip Code, the range among neighborhoods and even boroughs was striking, seeming to reflect the advantages of wealth and disadvantages of poverty. But Roosevelt Island proved an exception.

Results showed that 50% of residents in Corona had been infected while only 12.6% of Manhattan West Siders were. That is, ironically, good news at this point as Corona may be at or near herd immunity, meaning the likelihood of a renewed outbreak is very small.

By borough, according to a report in the New York Times, The Bronx had the highest positive rate, 33%, while Manhattan came in lowest at 19%.

As for Roosevelt Island, we weren't the best of Manhattan, but we scored below the borough average. With 394 out of 2243 testing positive, we came in at 17.6%.

Numerous factors contribute to final results. Corona, for example, is crowded and home to many healthcare and food service workers, many of whom stayed on the job and could not quarantine. That, it's assumed, contributed to the higher number.

And while Roosevelt Island is far from the wealthiest New York neighborhood, it's not densely populated, and unofficial observations suggest that RIOC's strong support for masks along with local media emphasis proved effective.

A combination of herd immunity and continued adherence to guidelines may prove prophylactic against a possible autumn second wave.
