6 to 12 Inches Expected

Winter Storm Expected To Barrel In Tonight, Continue Tomorrow

Spring really is just around the corner. Honest.
Spring really is just around the corner. Honest.

For those of us who lost our perspective when the temperature drifted into the 70s, last week, winter has an adjustment for us. The National Weather Service upgraded the Winter Storm Watch to a Warning earlier today. That changes the verb from might to will, snow that is, beginning overnight tonight and continuing through tomorrow. Total accumulations in the City can be as much as a foot.

After a mild and mostly sunny day today, high in the mid 40s, southeast winds will hold the temperature up enough to limit the storm's impact, starting around 10:00 p.m., to all rain. But by early morning, easterly winds pick up colder, moist air off the Atlantic.

A changeover to snow occurs around 1:00 a.m.

By morning rush tomorrow, aboveground commutes will be miserable. Snow build up should be around a half-foot with more to come through the day.

We'll be keeping track and update you on conditions plus any school and business closings.

Update 5/6/18: RIOC announced the there will be no parking on Main Street, from 8:00 tonight until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday. "As an alternative, free parking will be available at the Motorgate Garage starting at 5PM, Tuesday, March 6th, 2018.  Please note that free parking is ONLY for residents of the island.  Proof of residency and vehicle registration must be presented upon entering.  Vehicle must be registered to a Roosevelt Island resident. Vehicles accommodated for snow emergency must be moved by 8PM on Thursday, March 8th, 2018 when Main Street reopens for parking."

Now, that you're back in a winter frame of mind, keep that image. More snow is in the forecast for Friday and, again, on Monday.

But you can never hold back spring. This year, it arrives officially on March 20th, just two short weeks from today. Sing along with the great Tom Waits:
