The affect of not voting has never been fully analyzed because, it's assumed, non-voters - nearly half the population - have preferences similar to voters. But that shaky argument's getting shakier. Research shows it's untrue and may have decided the last presidential election.

With transparency at RIOC sharing qualities similar to those of a double-brick wall, it's difficult to tell if it's incompetence, political posturing, real estate profiteering or something else to blame. What we do know is that RIOC, without public explanation and behind closed doors, trash-canned a deal agreed on after more than a year in negotiation. Time's now running out for preserving a last chance at affordability.

After reading our article on RIOC's imperial takeover of Roosevelt Island Day, some readers asked the obvious question: "Where will the Farmer's Market be that day?" "How will RIOC ruin that?" one wondered. "Five bucks it never occurred to them?" I answered. Did I win my bet?

Last November, we wrote about the new, enhanced level of cluelessness infecting 591 Main Street with RIOC under the combined leadership of Governor Andrew Cuomo and President/CEO Susan Rosenthal. Since, shockers like the outright destruction of the Roosevelt Island Youth Program, a 40 year institution here, demonstrate disregard for community standards. Now, quality of life issues are taking a drubbing with RIOC giving off-islanders' needs preference over residents' as summer approaches.

It'd tickle your nostrils at concerts and private parties where hastily rolled joints circulated. But if it stunk like it sometimes does today, I'd have stayed with Ripple, our cheaper and legal alternative.

Ten years in place, welcoming arrivals on Roosevelt Island, the Visitor Center Kiosk has tenure longer than many who live here. It's taken for granted by many who forgot what it was like at the Tram or never knew. Historical Society staffers began doing for free what the Island's managers failed to do, that is, welcome visitors and residents alike and answer the steady flow of requests for information.

At RIOC, with Board Membership reduced to just 5, following the resignations of Margie Smith and Fay Christian, Governor Andrew Cuomo faces a golden opportunity for showing goodwill by acting on a duty for which he's been derelict. Cuomo can reestablish local control of the Board by appointing or reappointing all 9 members in time for the State Senate to confirm them before adjourning in June. The path's clear, if he choses to take it.

Governor Andrew Cuomo's congestions pricing plan, aimed at reducing Manhattan Traffic while providing new funds for the MTA, may or may not be good politics. Time will tell. But it's, in essence, a tax aimed squarely at the middle class, and that's bad for communities like Roosevelt Island.
