Some Ideas Evolve, Others Vanish. Fortunately

Would you believe a Queensboro Bridge Helix?

In 1944, the New York City Department of Public Works was looking for ways to increase access to Welfare Island. Here's what they came up with: A helix for access to and from the Queensboro Bridge.

Fortunately, the design went on to serve as a dust collector in the archive, a bad idea, rejected in time. The only worse idea is the impossible to crush stairway following a similar route. In fairness, though, the only thing the stairway lacks is common sense... oh, yeah, and a belief that anyone would climb up, just for a chance to walk another half-mile before setting foot on land.
