In a case of better late than never, RIOC's Public Safety Department actively began campaigning for bicycle safety on Roosevelt Island yesterday.

After we made a call for RIOC to "do something about the bikes," the state agency promised to look at strategies for promoting safety. Reckless rider behavior, from ignoring stop signs and crosswalks to cruising down sidewalks, had grown rampant on Main Street as well as East and West Promenades.

For that reason, it was great to see uniformed officers stopping bicyclists of all variety, handing out informative flyers and chatting about how to make the streets safe for everyone.

The flyers were thorough, powerful reminders about the rules of the road and why they are important.

Flyers handed out to all passing bike riders are a mix of information, common sense and law.
