RIOC Announces Changes: 4th of July Parking, Closures and More

The Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation promises a family-oriented activities to accompany Macy's 4th of July Fireworks, coordinating with Cornell Tech and FDR Four Freedoms Park. To make it all work as effectively as possible, today, they announced some restrictions and closures aimed at making access secure and safe for visitors and residents.

Closures: Tomorrow (July 3rd), in preparation, both Southpoint and FDR Four Freedoms Parks will be closed, reopening  on the 4th. On the holiday itself, Sportspark's indoor gym and pool will be closed all day.

Parking: Street parking south of the Tram plaza will be banned beginning July 3rd at 8:00 p.m. This includes primarily areas around Cornell Tech.

On Wednesday July 4th, RIOC announced, "Visitor parking at the Motorgate garage will be limited to ensure adequate parking for residents and patrons with a monthly permit."

Residents without a Motorgate access card will need to show show proof of residency when approaching the Roosevelt Island Bridge at Vernon Boulevard or be turned away.

Residents who need to park in Motorgate, including monthly parkers and others, must arrive no later than 5:00 p.m., on July 4th, to be sure you can get in.

Although the Tram is expected to be back in two cabin operation for the holiday, demand will be high because of nonresident visitors. The subway station, including MetroCard kiosks, is similarly expected to see long lines.

If you're planning on going, you will need to pass a security check on either roadway passing the Tram plaza. If you're going on to FDR Four Freedoms Park (Gates open at six.), you'll need to have your invitation with you on your smart phone or printed out. Additional, airport style security will be required to enter Four Freedoms.

Refreshments will be available from a special event grill menu at the café at Cornell Tech, starting at Noon, and from a host of food trucks inside Southpoint Park, opening at 6:00 p.m., where there will also be musical entertainment and activities for kids.
