Tram Shuttle Buses Run on Thanksgiving

From RIOC, Reason to be Thankful

From RIOC, Reason to be Thankful

After absorbing criticism for leaving Roosevelt Islanders, especially the elderly and physically challenged, stranded without shuttle bus services to and from Second Avenue during subway service reductions, RIOC seems to have gotten the message: Red buses will carry passengers for free, from the Roosevelt Island Tram Plaza to Second Avenue and back, from 3:00 to 8:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving.

Since its founding Roosevelt Island has been a safe harbor for many, but because of its isolation, availability of easy, accessible transit has been critical to a healthy communal environment.

It matters little whether the shuttles carry one or twenty passengers, it's an essential service while Tram repairs continue and even more so when subway shutdowns and reductions add extra stress.

And RIOC may be doing even more, repeating this service on Christmas day, according to reliable sources, although there has not yet been an official announcement.

So, this year, we can be thankful for RIOC's generosity, whether we as individuals need the services or not. Our neighbors do, and our advocacy for them is what makes Roosevelt Island a community, not simply an isolated neighborhood.
