Sidewalks broken up, small metal corrals with yellow construction tape around... what? If you've seen the above and wondered, we have the answer and they're positive signs for Roosevelt Island. What you're seeing are preparations for information kiosks Hudson's setting up under a contract with RIOC.

Longtime frustrations with the lack of signage to help visitors navigate the Island were answered by RIOC and Hudson when they came up with the idea of interactive kiosks that will be installed in various places. Those near the Tram and subway, most frequent arrival points for visitors, are likely to be most active.

Alex Kaplan, who's guiding the project for Hudson, builders of Southtown and partnered with the Related Companies in managing Main Street retail, tells The Daily that all the kiosks have been fabricated and are awaiting installation. That's also true of the most visible part of the project so far, the big red RI Welcome Monument set to be installed in the Roosevelt Island Tram Plaza.

Hudson shares New York Yankee fortunes with the weather. The Yankees are tied for the most rainouts in major league baseball. Similarly, storms have delayed having the kiosks up and running in July as planned.

If the weather cooperates, they - along with the RI Welcome Monument - should be fulfilling their assignments before Labor Day.
