Science fiction films fill the big screen in Southpoint Park, this weekend, as RIOC schedules a two-night double feature and more. UPDATE: RIOC has cancelled Saturday night's movie because of predicted rainy weather. It will be shown next Saturday instead.

Going tonight? The café at Cornell Tech will be serving classic grill and free popcorn with full meals until 8:00.

"The next two installments of the free Roosevelt Island Outdoor Summer Movie Series are showing this Friday and Saturday evenings," RIOC reminds us. On tap are Star Wars: The Last Jedi and The Fifth Element, both showing at Southpoint Park on a 40-foot-wide super-HD screen.

"All movie festivities begin at 7 p.m.; the movies air at sundown. Visitors are encouraged to arrive early and bring their own lawn chairs and blankets; pets are welcome."

RIOC adds special features:

"At Friday’s screening we welcome Verizon, who’ll be donating trivia contest and raffle prizes, as well as providing information to residents about their customer offers on Roosevelt Island.

"Also prior to this Friday’s film, we will screen the FDR Four Freedoms State Park documentary: Face Your Freedoms. Produced by Four Freedoms, in association with Studio in a School and the Bloomberg Arts & Culture Internship Program, the documentary is an intergenerational piece about civic engagement."

Families may have a hard time staying home.
