"We have an important music-theater piece called More Or Less I Am, which is drawn from Walt Whitman's Song of Myself (1855 edition)," says Karin Coonrod, Director at Compagnia De' Colombari. And FDR Four Freedoms Park welcomes visitors to this emotional celebration honoring Whitman's 200th birthday.

"It shouts out the Democracy of the New World," Coonrod adds, "urging its listeners to not be bowed down but rather to lift up heads to see the value of the other in this New World."

Four Freedoms Conservancy CEO Howard Axel shares her enthusiasm.

"Four Freedoms Park Conservancy is excited to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Walt Whitman's birth with Compagnia de’ Colombari’s More Or Less I Am," says Axel. "I can think of no better location for a performance celebrating the 'poet of democracy's' vision for an inclusive society. I hope many Roosevelt Island residents will join us at this free event."

Staged in Four Freedoms Park from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. on May 30th, the eve of Whitmans 200th birthday, More Or Less I Am lasts an hour.

Coonrod explains, "It involves 8 singer-actors, 6 musicians, one child. The piece requires all the performers to be on mic (with exception of the steel drum and the trumpet). If played at the twilight hour--which is the preference and the most beautiful) we will have our lights to greet the descending darkness. We will carry with us our little world of weathered boxes and lanterns to set up in the stage space."

We'll share more information with you in the run up to this exciting show, but please take time to register today on Four Freedom Park's website.

Thanks. We hope to see you there.
